How Congress can cap California’s gas tax — and save you thousands
Summary: Congressman Kevin Kiley wants to lower the price of gas in California. Right now, Californians pay the highest gas taxes in the country—about 71 cents per gallon. Even with all that extra tax money, California still has some of the worst roads and biggest potholes.
Kiley's new bill, the Gas Tax Reduction Act, would force states to keep their gas taxes under 50 cents. If a state refuses, it would lose federal money for its highways. This plan could save drivers a lot of money at the pump while forcing the state to fix its spending.
