How to Treat Ingrown Fingernails

Summary: An ingrown fingernail happens when the side of your nail grows into your skin, causing pain and swelling. It can make everyday things like typing or texting really hurt! Luckily, you can usually treat it at home. Just soak your finger in warm water a few times a day, keep it dry afterward, and apply some antibiotic ointment.

Whatever you do, don't try to dig or cut the nail out yourself—that can make it much worse! If it gets super painful, fills with pus, or if you have diabetes, see a doctor right away to prevent a serious bacterial infection. To avoid ingrown nails in the future, always trim your nails straight across and don't cut them too short.
