Impact of Mannitol on Left Atrial Pressure in Dogs With Mitral Regurgitation.
Summary: Mannitol is a medicine often used to reduce swelling in the brain by pulling extra water out of the body. But veterinarians weren't sure if it was safe for dogs with leaky heart valves (mitral regurgitation). This study tested different amounts of mannitol on dogs with this heart problem to see how their bodies reacted. They found that low and medium amounts were mostly safe. However, a high dose caused a sudden, dangerous jump in heart pressure right after it was given, though it went back to normal after an hour. The takeaway? Vets need to be very careful if they give high doses of mannitol to dogs with bad heart valves.
