Impact of Nasal Glucocorticoid Therapy on Exhaled Nitric Oxide and Symptom Relief in Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Nasal Polyps: A Randomized Prospective Study.
Summary: Chronic sinus inflammation with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) is a difficult condition to treat. In a recent study, doctors investigated whether measuring nitric oxide—a gas naturally exhaled through the nose—could help classify patients and track their recovery after sinus surgery. They found that patients with a specific "eosinophilic" type of inflammation had distinct nitric oxide levels compared to others. Interestingly, while steroid nasal sprays helped these specific patients return to normal nitric oxide levels quickly after surgery, the gas measurement itself wasn't a reliable way to visually judge how well the surgical wounds were healing.
