Intensification of extreme cold events in East Asia in response to global mean sea-level rise.
Summary: You might think that rising sea levels only cause flooding on the coasts. But our new study shows they also change the weather far inland! We used computer models to see how higher oceans affect winter weather in East Asia. Surprisingly, higher sea levels slow down the winds high up in the sky. This creates "blocks" in the air that push freezing cold air down into East Asia. So, as sea levels keep going up, we can expect even stronger and more frequent freezing cold snaps in the future.
