Is primary thinning of the anterolateral thigh flap recommended?

Summary: Reconstructive surgeons often use tissue from the thigh (the ALT flap) to repair other parts of the body. To make the repair look better, they sometimes thin out the fat from this tissue during the initial surgery. While this technique works well in Asian patients, it has been debated for Western patients due to differences in body type and blood vessel anatomy. This study reviewed the medical evidence and found a clear safety rule: if the patch of tissue is large (over 150 square centimeters), it should not be thinned immediately, or the tissue might die due to poor blood flow. Smaller patches, however, appear safer to thin.
