Linezolid Shows Similar Results to Clindamycin in Severe, Necrotizing SSTIs

Summary: When you have a severe, fast-spreading skin infection, doctors usually give you an antibiotic called clindamycin to stop the dangerous bacteria. But lately, bacteria are getting better at fighting it off. Because of this, researchers looked at another drug called linezolid to see if it works just as well.

A new review of several studies compared the two drugs and found they are practically tied. Patients spent about the same amount of time in the hospital and the intensive care unit no matter which drug they took. They also had the same survival rates. The best news? Linezolid might actually be safer for your kidneys. While doctors still need to do larger studies to be absolutely sure, linezolid is proving to be a strong and safe backup weapon against tough skin infections.
