Lipedema and adipose tissue: current understanding, controversies, and future directions.

Summary: Lipedema is a long-lasting condition where fat builds up evenly in the lower body, mostly affecting women. Even though it looks a lot like regular weight gain, it is actually very different from typical obesity. In lipedema, the fat cells grow larger and cause swelling, but they don't trigger the same harmful inflammation seen in obesity. In fact, the fat stays metabolically "healthy." Researchers think changes in hormones, especially estrogen around the time of menopause, might trigger the condition. Right now, there is no simple test or cure, but scientists are working hard to find new treatments and better ways to diagnose it.
