Liver Failure, Hepatic Encephalopathy, and Infection Contribute to Mortality Risk in a Global Cirrhosis Cohort.

Summary: Imagine your liver is a giant filter for your body. When it gets severely scarred—a condition called cirrhosis—it stops working well, and toxins can build up. Doctors looked at over 8,800 patients worldwide to figure out which warning signs mean a patient is at the highest risk of dying while in the hospital.

They found that high levels of a yellow pigment in the blood (bilirubin), slow blood clotting (measured by INR), severe brain fog (hepatic encephalopathy), and infections are the biggest red flags. If a patient has severe brain fog, high bilirubin, and slow clotting, their risk of dying in the hospital is very high (33%). But if those numbers are low and their brain is clear, the risk is tiny (just 3%). This simple checklist helps doctors know exactly who needs the most urgent, life-saving care!
