Long-Term Safety and Efficacy of Mepolizumab in Eosinophilic Granulomatosis With Polyangiitis.
Summary: For people suffering from Eosinophilic Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis (EGPA), a rare condition where the immune system attacks blood vessels, treatment usually involves long-term use of oral steroids. While effective, these steroids come with harsh side effects. A recent long-term study followed 100 patients previously treated in a major trial to see how they fared on a monthly injection called Mepolizumab. The results were promising: patients were able to safely continue the treatment for over three years. Importantly, this drug allowed many patients to significantly lower their daily steroid dose, and nearly one-third were able to stop taking steroids entirely, sparing them from the associated long-term risks.
