Magnesium sulphate and other anticonvulsants for women with pre-eclampsia.

Summary: For pregnant women suffering from pre-eclampsia (high blood pressure during pregnancy), the risk of developing dangerous seizures—known as eclampsia—is a serious concern. A comprehensive review of medical trials involving over 11,000 women shows that Magnesium Sulphate is the gold-standard treatment. It cuts the risk of these seizures by more than half compared to other drugs or placebos and significantly lowers the risk of placental problems. However, it’s not without downsides: about one in four women experience uncomfortable side effects like hot flushes, and there is a slightly higher chance of needing a cesarean section. While it saves mothers' lives, it doesn't appear to improve survival rates for the babies in the short term.
