Magnetic Seizure Therapy Noninferior to RUL-UB ECT for Major Depression

Summary: For adults dealing with severe depression, a new study brings highly encouraging news. Doctors compared a newer treatment called magnetic seizure therapy (MST) to a standard electrical treatment known as ECT. They found that both treatments are effective at helping patients overcome major depression, with remission rates around 22 to 27 percent.

However, MST has a massive advantage: it is much safer for your memory. While about 17 percent of ECT patients experienced worsening of their personal, autobiographical memories, less than 3 percent of MST patients had the same issue. Fewer people also dropped out of the MST treatment. This means patients can get the heavy-hitting mental health relief they need without the scary side effect of forgetting important parts of their lives.
