Mental Health and Access to Resources in a Schoolteacher Population Impacted by Earthquakes and the Pandemic in Puerto Rico.
Summary: Imagine trying to teach children while dealing with the aftermath of major earthquakes and a global pandemic! A recent study looked at 58 schoolteachers in Puerto Rico who faced exactly this situation. The results were tough: nearly half of the teachers had a hard time fixing their damaged homes, and a third struggled to get medical care.
Sadly, the stress took a heavy toll on their mental health. About 1 in 4 teachers showed signs of depression, 1 in 5 had PTSD, and 1 in 8 suffered from severe anxiety. This study proves that teachers desperately need mental health support after big disasters so they can heal and keep helping our kids.
