Monica Bertagnolli Elected President of the National Academy of Medicine

Summary: Dr. Monica Bertagnolli has just made history! She was elected as the next president of the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) and will take charge in July 2026. She is the very first woman to hold this top spot since the group started in 1970. Before this, she was the head of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and a top cancer surgeon who studied stomach cancers and tumors.

Dr. Bertagnolli grew up in rural Wyoming, and she cares deeply about making sure people in remote country towns get good healthcare and are included in important medical research. Her fellow doctors are thrilled to have her use her data skills and medical know-how to make the health system better for everyone.
