Monitoring MacTel: Why BCVA does not tell the whole story | Ophthalmology Times - Clinical Insights for Eye Specialists

Summary: Eye doctors usually rely on the standard eye chart to check your vision. But for a sneaky eye disease called MacTel, this standard test doesn't tell the whole story. MacTel damages the outer edges of your central vision first. Because of this, a patient might read single letters perfectly at the doctor's office, but struggle to read whole words at home because parts of the letters seem to disappear.

Because the standard eye chart misses this, MacTel is often misdiagnosed. To catch it, doctors need to use special 3D eye scans, called OCT, to spot the hidden damage and listen closely to patients when they complain about their daily reading struggles.
