Naloxone Has Limitations for Reversing ODs From Fentanyl, Sufentanil
Summary: A new study shows that Narcan (naloxone) might not be strong enough to quickly fix overdoses from powerful synthetic drugs like fentanyl. Researchers tested Narcan on people who were given fentanyl or sufentanil. They found that while Narcan helped them start breathing normally again in just 2 to 4 minutes, it took up to 17 minutes for dangerous carbon dioxide to leave their bodies. Because these newer drugs are so strong, the usual dose of Narcan has its limits. Doctors say this means we might need updated medical rules, and it proves that calling 911 for fast emergency help is more important than ever.
