Neurological complications of pandemic influenza (H1N1) in children.

Summary: While the H1N1 flu is best known for causing respiratory illness, it can also trigger serious neurological complications in children. A study of eight hospitalized children, ranging from infants to 7-year-olds, found that the virus could lead to seizures, confusion, and brain inflammation. Half of these children were previously healthy, while the others had existing medical conditions. Doctors treated everyone with antiviral and anti-seizure medications. The good news is that the previously healthy children made a full recovery. However, the virus proved much more dangerous for those with underlying health issues, such as kidney failure. This highlights that for kids, the flu can sometimes affect the brain as much as the lungs.
