New-onset Bipolar Disorder in Hidradenitis Suppurativa Patients: A Multi-center, Propensity-score-matched Cohort Study.
Summary: Living with Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS)—a chronic, painful skin condition characterized by lumps and abscesses—is physically demanding, but new research suggests it may also impact mental health. In a large study analyzing the records of over 60,000 patients, researchers found that people with HS were approximately 50% more likely to develop Bipolar Disorder compared to those without the condition. Notably, this increased risk was found specifically in female patients, while male patients did not show a significant increase. Because of this link, the study suggests that doctors treating women with HS should be vigilant about monitoring their mental well-being.
