Odds of Advanced Liver Fibrosis Up With Episodic Heavy Drinking

Summary: Do you sometimes drink a lot on the weekends, even if you eat healthy and exercise during the week? A new study shows that this "work hard, play hard" lifestyle can be very dangerous for your body. Researchers looked at people with a common condition called MASLD (metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease). They found that almost 16% of these people are occasional heavy drinkers.

Even if you only drink heavily once in a while, it makes you much more likely to get severe liver scarring, known as advanced liver fibrosis. In fact, the odds of this severe scarring jump by almost three times. Dr. Brian P. Lee, the lead researcher, warns that people need to understand the dangers of occasional heavy drinking and should avoid it completely, even if they only drink a moderate amount the rest of the time.
