One-Third With Inflammatory Bowel Disease Have Moderate to Severe Disability
Summary: Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is much more than just an upset stomach. A new study reveals that nearly one-third of people with IBD deal with moderate to severe disability in their daily lives. When the disease is active, that number jumps to over half of all patients.
The study also found that Crohn's disease causes slightly more disability than ulcerative colitis. Surprisingly, many patients still struggle with this disability even when their disease is quiet and in remission. Experts say this proves doctors need to closely monitor how patients are actually functioning day-to-day, not just treat their medical symptoms.
