Optometrist vs. Ophthalmologist: What’s the Difference?

Summary: Are your eyes bothering you? It can be confusing to know which eye doctor to see. Think of an optometrist like your regular doctor, but just for your eyes. They do routine check-ups, prescribe glasses or contacts, and spot common problems like astigmatism. But they can't do surgery!

If you need surgery (like LASIK) or have a serious eye disease like severe glaucoma or cataracts, you need an ophthalmologist. They are medical doctors who can perform surgery and treat complex issues.

Finally, there are opticians. They don't test your eyes or write prescriptions; they just help you pick out and fit your cool new glasses! If you have blurry vision or eye pain, start with an optometrist. They will send you to a surgical specialist if you need one. Make sure to get your eyes checked once a year!
