Oral health in individuals with cystic fibrosis: A cross-sectional study.

Summary: Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease that causes thick mucus to build up in the lungs and other organs. But did you know it also affects the mouth? In a study of children and teens with CF, researchers looked closely at their teeth and saliva. They found that nearly half of the kids had defects in their tooth enamel, and many had low saliva flow with a basic (non-acidic) pH. Interestingly, less than 20% had cavities! Because these kids take many medications—like enzymes, vitamins, and antibiotics—and face unique health challenges, it is super important for dentists to focus on special care and preventing tooth damage.
