P-CABs Do Not Increase CDI Risk Relative to Other Acid-Lowering Drugs
Summary: If you take medicine for heartburn or acid reflux, you might worry about side effects like getting a bad stomach bug called C. diff. A new study looked at a newer type of heartburn medicine called P-CABs to see if they cause this infection. Researchers checked data from almost a million patients at 15 hospitals. They compared P-CABs to older medicines like PPIs and H2RAs.
The good news? P-CABs do not increase your risk of getting a C. diff infection. The study did find that older PPI medicines might slightly raise the risk for men or people taking strong antibiotics. But overall, these newer P-CAB drugs seem safe for your gut when you need to fight off severe heartburn.
