Parents' perceptions of outcomes of a college program for students with intellectual disabilities: Beyond the classroom.
Summary: Going to college is a big step for anyone, but for students with intellectual disabilities, it can be life-changing in unexpected ways. A recent study looked at how college programs at Minority Serving Institutions help these students grow, not just in the classroom, but in everyday life. Researchers spoke with 14 parents whose children were in these programs. The parents reported that their kids learned to handle more responsibilities at home and improved their social skills. Perhaps most importantly, the students felt better about themselves, and the parents began to see their children as more capable and independent. These programs help students become active, confident members of their communities.
