Pfizer will seek approval for its Lyme disease vaccine

Summary: Pfizer is hoping to get a new Lyme disease vaccine approved after recent tests showed it is highly effective. In a major study, the four-dose vaccine blocked over 70% of confirmed Lyme disease cases, even though it slightly missed one specific math goal because there were fewer cases than expected.

Lyme disease comes from blacklegged ticks and can cause serious problems if ignored, like fever, rashes, arthritis, and even facial paralysis. While the government officially counted about 89,000 cases in 2023, experts believe almost half a million people actually get it every year! The last Lyme vaccine was canceled way back in 2002 because of false rumors about side effects that ruined its sales. If approved, Pfizer and its partner Valneva hope to have this new shot ready for the public by the second half of 2027.
