Photodynamic therapy in the treatment of chronic periodontitis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Summary: Gum disease (chronic periodontitis) is typically treated with a deep cleaning procedure known as scaling and root planing. Researchers reviewed multiple studies to see if adding "light therapy" (antimicrobial photodynamic therapy) to this cleaning improved results. They found that adding light therapy helped gums heal better—specifically improving attachment and reducing pocket depth—but only in the short term (at 3 months). By 6 months, the benefits faded, and the results were no different than deep cleaning alone. Furthermore, using light therapy by itself without the deep cleaning was not effective. While it offers a temporary boost, it is not a long-term cure or a replacement for standard treatment.
