Policymakers have a roadmap to ease medical student debt
Summary: Doctors carry more student loan debt than almost any other professionals. Sadly, new federal rules are making this heavy burden even worse. In 2025, a rule capped some student loans at $50,000 a year. This strict limit doesn't lower tuition; it just hurts students from lower-income families who want to become family doctors. Other rule changes have made it harder to get loans forgiven after doing public service. The American Academy of Family Physicians is speaking out. They are warning the government that if we don't fix these loan programs, we will face a huge shortage of primary care doctors. We need these doctors to help prevent and fight chronic diseases, especially in rural areas. The Academy is asking people to contact Congress to protect loan forgiveness and support future doctors.
