Positive Ion Tandem Mass Spectrometry Offers Enhanced Structural Insights for the Discovery of Mercapturic Acids.

Summary: When our bodies break down harmful chemicals, like those from cigarette smoke, they leave behind tiny clues in our urine called mercapturic acids. Scientists usually look for these clues using a special machine set to a "negative" mode. But in this new study, researchers switched the machine to a "positive" mode. This simple change gave them a much clearer picture! By comparing the urine of 20 smokers and 20 non-smokers, they found 180 of these clues, with 33 directly linked to smoking. They even discovered a brand-new chemical clue tied to tobacco use. This new method helps doctors better understand how our bodies handle toxic chemicals.
