Preschool children of parents who screen positive for mental health problems have an increased risk of subsequent mental disorders: Findings from a longitudinal follow-up study in Sweden.
Summary: When parents struggle with their mental health, does it affect their children later on? A study in Sweden looked at over 12,000 mothers and fathers of preschool-aged kids. Researchers checked back in with the families seven years later to see how the children were doing.
The study found that if a mother had mental health issues, her child was more likely to be diagnosed with a mental health disorder later in life. For fathers, this link wasn't as strong once other things like education and family setup were considered. Kids who had early behavior issues, or whose parents lived apart, also had a higher risk. This shows how important it is for doctors to check on both moms and kids early so the whole family can get the support they need to stay healthy!
