Prevalence of oral HPV infection and genotype distribution in Iranian children during the early ages of life.

Summary: Did you know that some babies and toddlers can have the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) in their mouths? A new study in Iran looked at 201 children under age 5. They found that nearly 8% of these kids had oral HPV, with the highest rates in babies under one month old. The most common types found were HPV16 and HPV18, which are known to cause health problems later in life. The study also showed that if a mother has oral HPV, her child is much more likely to have it too, though babies might catch it from other places as well. This shows why screening and giving moms the HPV vaccine is so important to protect our little ones!
