Prevalence of the Six Major Non-O157 Serogroups of Shiga Toxin-Producing

Summary: You have probably heard of E. coli, the bacteria often linked to food poisoning from undercooked meat or unwashed vegetables. For years, doctors and food safety experts focused mainly on one specific type, known as O157. However, this study highlights that there are six other major types—often called the "Big Six"—that can also make people very sick. The researchers looked at how common these other types are. They found that these "cousins" of the famous bacteria are significant enough that we cannot ignore them. To ensure our food supply is truly safe, we need to look for these six types just as carefully as we look for the original one.
