Protagonist opts for $475M in Takeda payouts instead of splitting US rusfertide profits
Summary: Protagonist Therapeutics had a big choice to make: share future US profits for their new blood disease drug with their partner Takeda, or take a massive payout right now. They chose the cash! They will get $200 million immediately and another $275 million if the FDA approves the drug, plus royalties later.
The drug, called rusfertide, treats a rare blood disorder called polycythemia vera (PV). It acts like a natural hormone to control red blood cell production, which means patients might not need to get their blood drawn as often.
