Provider Factors Drive Gaps in Cardiac Screening for Patients With Cancer
Summary: When you are fighting cancer, the last thing you want is heart trouble. But a new study shows a huge gap in heart care for cancer patients. Researchers looked at older women on cancer drugs that can harm the heart. They found that only about 4 in 10 of these patients get their heart checked before starting treatment. Even worse, less than 1% get regular heart check-ups afterward!
Who is dropping the ball? It turns out that individual doctors are a bigger reason for this missed step than the hospitals themselves. Interestingly, patients with a history of drinking alcohol were even less likely to get that initial heart check. If you or a loved one are starting cancer treatment, make sure to speak up and ask your doctor about protecting your heart.
