Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy No More Effective Than Antidepressants
Summary: A new study looked at whether psychedelic-assisted therapy is better than regular antidepressants for treating major depression. Researchers from UCLA and UCSF checked 24 studies with thousands of patients. They found that psychedelics are actually no better than standard antidepressants.
A big problem with psychedelic studies is that patients usually know they are getting the drug because of its strong effects. This makes them expect to feel better. But even when comparing psychedelics to regular antidepressants where patients also knew what they were taking, the results were exactly the same. This surprised researchers because there is so much public hype right now about psychedelics fixing mental health. (As a side note, one of the study authors mentioned they have ties to the drug company Roche).
