Purification and characterization of two non-starch polysaccharides from bulbils of Dioscorea opposita Thunb. 'Tiegun' and their antioxidant and hypoglycemic activity.

Summary: Did you know that parts of the yam plant are often thrown away? Farmers usually harvest the underground roots of the 'Tiegun' yam but toss out the small bulbs that grow on the leaves. Scientists decided to test these forgotten bulbs and found something amazing! By using a special water extraction method, they pulled out two unique natural sugars. When tested in the lab, these sugars acted like superheroes—they fought off harmful molecules (acting as antioxidants) and helped block the enzymes that raise blood sugar. Instead of being treated as trash, these tiny yam bulbs could soon be used to make healthy foods and medicines, helping both our bodies and the environment!
