QI for Hospitalists: Quality, Safety, Transparency

Summary: Hospitals are supposed to be safe, but mistakes happen. In fact, up to 25% of hospital patients experience some kind of unexpected harm or adverse event. To fix this, hospital doctors (called hospitalists) use something called Quality Improvement, or QI.

QI isn't about massive, expensive research. It's about small, everyday changes. It means reporting safety issues, figuring out what went wrong, and talking honestly with patients and their families. New rules from Medicare are even making it mandatory for hospitals to prove they are committed to patient safety and transparency. By working together as a team, doctors and nurses can make hospitals safer for everyone.
