Re-focusing visual working memory during expected and unexpected memory tests.
Summary: Have you ever tried to hold a picture in your mind, only to be asked about a different part of it than you expected? Scientists studied how our brains shift focus inside our memories. They tracked eye movements and brain activity while people took memory tests.
They found that when we are tested on something we expect, our brain does a quick "double-check" of the memory. But when we are surprised by a question, it takes our brain much longer to shift its focus to the unexpected memory. This shows our minds can zoom in, zoom out, and refocus on our inner thoughts just like we do with our eyes in the real world!
