Real-world effectiveness and safety of oral Azvudine versus Paxlovid for COVID-19 in patients with kidney disease: a multicenter, retrospective, cohort study.
Summary: For patients with kidney disease, catching COVID-19 can be particularly dangerous, and finding safe treatments is often a challenge. A recent study involving over 600 patients looked at how a newer antiviral drug, Azvudine, compares to the standard treatment, Paxlovid. The findings were encouraging: Azvudine worked just as well as Paxlovid in preventing severe illness and death. Interestingly, for patients with moderate COVID-19 symptoms, Azvudine actually performed slightly better in slowing disease progression. Both drugs had similar safety profiles, though Azvudine showed fewer issues with phosphate levels. This study suggests that kidney patients now have a second, equally effective option for fighting COVID-19.
