Reciprocal associations between confidence in getting social support and academic expectancies and subjective task values: Stronger for first-generation and transfer students.
Summary: Navigating university can be daunting, especially for students who are the first in their families to attend college or who transfer from community colleges. This study explored the relationship between a student's confidence in getting help—from professors or peers—and their academic motivation. The researchers found a "two-way street": believing support is available boosts motivation, and being motivated increases the confidence to seek help. Most importantly, this positive cycle was found to be significantly stronger for first-generation and transfer students. This suggests that university programs focused on social support are crucial tools for leveling the playing field, regardless of whether classes are held in person or online.
