Resource bounds on mental simulations: Evidence from a liquid-reasoning task.

Summary: Have you ever guessed how long it takes to fill a glass of water from a pitcher? Our brains act like a mini-computer to imagine the water pouring. But just like a computer, our brain has limits! In a new study, scientists asked people to guess how fast different containers would fill up. For short times, like 1 to 7 seconds, people were really good at it. But when it took longer, their brains seemed to run out of memory and hit a limit. People with worse short-term memory hit this limit even faster. This shows we do run "mental movies" to understand the world, but our brain's battery can run out if the movie is too long!
