Restoring neuropetide Y levels in the hypothalamus ameliorates premature aging phenotype in mice.
Summary: Scientists may have found a "reset button" for aging inside the brain's control center, the hypothalamus. A specific chemical called Neuropeptide Y (NPY) acts like a cellular housekeeper, triggering a cleaning process called autophagy that keeps cells healthy. Unfortunately, NPY levels drop as we get older. In a study using mice bred to age prematurely, researchers restored these NPY levels. The result? The treatment kicked the cellular cleaning crew back into gear and significantly reversed signs of aging. While this is currently a mouse study, it suggests that keeping our brain chemistry balanced could be a key to longevity.
