Rhein alleviates diabetic cardiomyopathy by inhibiting mitochondrial dynamics disorder, apoptosis and hypertrophy in cardiomyocytes.
Summary: Diabetes can cause serious problems for the heart, a condition known as diabetic heart disease. Right now, there aren't many good treatments for it. Scientists recently studied a natural plant chemical called Rhein, which is found in rhubarb. They tested Rhein on mice with diabetes and on heart cells in a lab. They discovered that Rhein helped the heart pump better and stopped heart cells from dying or getting too thick. It worked by fixing the tiny energy factories inside the cells, called mitochondria. Because of this, Rhein could be a promising new treatment for diabetic heart problems in the future!
