Sarepta sees early success with RNAi drugs from Arrowhead
Summary: Sarepta Therapeutics saw its stock jump 25% after sharing good news about two new experimental drugs, SRP-1001 and SRP-1003. The company got these medicines through a $1 billion deal with Arrowhead Pharmaceuticals. These drugs treat rare genetic diseases that cause muscles to waste away. They work by sending tiny pieces of RNA (called siRNA) directly into muscle tissue to fix genetic mistakes. For example, SRP-1001 blocks a toxic protein called DUX4 that destroys muscle cells. Early tests showed the drugs reached the muscles successfully without severe side effects, though doctors did note two unrelated heart issues. This early success is a much-needed win for Sarepta, which recently faced research setbacks, staff layoffs, and the upcoming retirement of its CEO, Doug Ingram.
