Serum hCG level and rising world health organization score at second-line chemotherapy (pulse dactinomycin): poor prognostic factors for methotrexate-failed low-risk gestational trophoblastic neoplasia.
Summary: For women facing a specific type of pregnancy-related tumor (low-risk gestational trophoblastic neoplasia), the standard first treatment is usually a drug called methotrexate. However, this doesn't work for everyone. When it fails, doctors often switch to a second drug called "pulse dactinomycin." This study looked at 37 patients to see how well this second option worked. The results were generally encouraging: about 76% of women were cured by this second drug alone. However, the study found that if a patient had higher hormone levels (hCG) or a worsening risk score at the time of the switch, the second drug was much more likely to fail, requiring further, more aggressive treatment to finally achieve a cure.
