Shared responsibility in patient care needs boundaries

Summary: Have you ever left the doctor's office and heard, "Call if it gets worse"? It sounds helpful, but it can actually be confusing and risky. What exactly does "worse" mean? Doctors shouldn't leave patients to guess if their pain is bad enough to call. When instructions are vague, patients might wait too long to get help or worry too much over normal symptoms. Instead of vague advice, doctors need to give clear rules, like "Call if the pain lasts more than 48 hours, wakes you up at night, or if you have unexplained weight loss." This takes the guesswork out of getting better, keeps care safe, and makes sure patients and doctors are on the exact same page.
