Spring Is Here! Avoid Aches and Injuries in the Garden
Summary: Spring is here, and gardening season is starting! But after a long winter of sitting around, jumping right into planting and weeding can hurt your body. Gardening uses all your big muscles, like your back, neck, legs, and arms.
To stop aches and pains, you need to warm up and stretch before you start. Try stretching your legs by putting your heel on a step, hugging yourself to stretch your back, and reaching over your head. Remember to breathe and never stretch until it hurts.
When you are working in the dirt, protect your joints. Kneel instead of bending over, and don't stay in one awkward position for too long. If you have to pick up something heavy, keep your back straight and lift with your strong leg muscles, not your waist. Keep the heavy object close to your body.
If you do get sore after planting your flowers and vegetables, use an ice pack or a heat pack, or visit a chiropractor to help you feel better.
