STAT+: Kyverna Therapeutics plans to submit cell therapy for stiff person syndrome for FDA approval

Summary: Imagine hitting a reset button on your body's immune system. That is exactly what a new treatment from Kyverna Therapeutics aims to do for people with stiff person syndrome. This rare neurological disease causes severe muscle stiffness and limits movement. In a recent study, a special one-time treatment called CAR-T cell therapy helped patients move better and reduced their disabilities.

Right now, CAR-T is only used for blood cancers. But by using engineered T cells to clear out bad B cells, it acts like a total system reboot for the body. Kyverna plans to ask the FDA for approval by the middle of the year. If they say yes, it will be the very first treatment for stiff person syndrome and a massive breakthrough for autoimmune diseases everywhere.
