Suitability of paddy cultivation in the Western province of Sri Lanka under different climate change scenarios.
Summary: Climate change is a major threat to farming and our global food supply. In Sri Lanka, farmers rely heavily on rain to grow rice (also known as paddy). This study looked at how changing weather patterns might affect rice farming in Sri Lanka's Western province by the years 2030 and 2050. Using computer models, researchers found alarming news: the amount of land that is good for growing rice will shrink significantly. Depending on how severe climate change gets, up to 68% of the currently suitable rice-growing land could be lost by 2050. This means we need to act fast to find new ways to farm, adapt to the changing climate, and protect our food supply.
