Surveys of Knowledge and Awareness of Plastic Pollution and Risk Reduction Behavior in the General Population: A Systematic Review.
Summary: Plastic pollution is a major global issue, and understanding what the public knows about it is crucial for creating effective solutions. Researchers recently reviewed 17 different surveys conducted between 2019 and 2024, mostly in Europe, that measured public knowledge and attitudes toward plastic risks. Unfortunately, the review found that the majority of these surveys were of low scientific quality. Most did not ask well-tested questions or ensure they were surveying a representative group of people. Because of these flaws, the current data on public awareness may not be reliable. The study concludes that future surveys must use stricter scientific methods to truly help public health efforts.
