Synthesis and characterization of clove/gelatin coated silk sutures for surgical site infection and wound healing.

Summary: Imagine having surgery to fix a problem, only to get a bad infection right where the doctor made the cut. This happens in about 5 out of every 100 surgeries. To help stop this, scientists invented a special new thread for stitches. They coated the silk thread with a mix of gelatin and clove extract—yes, the exact same spicy clove used in baking! Clove is a natural germ-killer.

When they tested different amounts, a 20% clove mixture worked the best. It easily killed dangerous bacteria, was totally safe for human skin cells, and didn't harm blood cells. When they tested these new stitches on rats, the wounds healed completely, much better than wounds closed with regular thread. This new "spicy stitch" could soon help patients heal faster and stay safe from dangerous infections!
